With the NHL looking to market their game as much as possible south of the border, the NHL could not ask for any more than the great rivalry between two of the leauges most marketable players: Sidney "The Kid" Crosby and Alexander "The Great" Ovechkin. With both players making their NHL debuts in the 2005-06 season, these two players could not come on the scene at a better time. The NHL was coming out of a season were there was no hockey due to the lockout, and the NHL had fallen down the ladder in comparision to the other big sports leagues in the USA.

Sid the Kid and Alexander the GreatWith both players going number one overall in their respective drafts , Ovechkin in 2004 and Crosby in 2005, the hype was already building going into their rookie seasons. And both players did not disappoint, as Sid the Kid scored 102 points and Alexander The Great scored 106 points en route to a Calder Trophy as the leagues rookie of the year.
